Following Your (Ever Changing) Bliss – 9th April 2012

Latest Post: For someone whose lifelong dream it is to be a writer, I really don’t feel inspired to write. In fact, every time I decide to make “becoming a writer” a priority in my life, I always lose my motivation to write anything at all. Even a birthday card feels like too much pressure… Writing has always been my passion, my therapy and my soul’s creative outlet, so I can’t tell you how empty my life feels when I’m not composing sentences in my head. Not to mention how inconvenient it is when I have declared publicly that I will somehow “become” a writer this year, fashioned an entire social activism campaign around this goal and recruited a bunch of other people to strive for their dreams alongside me so that I, myself, remain accountable. Very inconvenient, indeed…(continue reading)

The Countless Truths of Kony 2012 – 13th March, 2012

Featured Post: Looking around the blogasphere this week it would appear I could not legitimately call myself a blogger unless I publish a post about Joseph Kony. Although I haven’t really been able to call myself a blogger at all over the last seven months while I was sucked down a black blogging hole somewhere between starting university and driving to Romania… But as this site has an underlying theme of promoting freedom and bringing an end to child slavery, it would be unusual if I didn’t have something to say about last week’s Kony media explosion. By the time I actually got around to watching the video yesterday, almost 72 million people had beaten me to it. That’s more than three times the population of my country, which I find absolutely phenomenal. I had seen the video reposted around Facebook for a week and I had observed the hype and debates which sprung up as a result. I watched people who are not generally inspired towards social activism become empowered to act, and I witnessed bogans from my local community declaring April 20th’s “Paint the town” campaign was a great excuse to start a riot (comments which have since been removed from cyberspace by the Facebook Gods). Without watching the video I could already see shades of night and day…(continue reading)

The Karaoke Demon - August 14, 2011

Featured Post:One of my greatest gifts is my ability to dream – both asleep and awake – anywhere, at anytime. Just on the commuter train to Sydney I can travel every continent of the world, have lunch with Joan of Arc, then meet a movie director while I’m sipping cocktails in Bora Bora who wants to buy the film rights to my last three best-selling novels. I don’t need an Ipod or a book on long journeys, my imagination gives me all the distraction and escapism I need without even having to close my eyes. On the flip side, it also explains why I can be a bit dangerous behind the wheel of a car… Up until recently, I thought everyone was like that. I thought everyone daydreamed about all the possible tangents their lives could take. And it wasn’t until I started getting emails about Project 30/30 that I realised that even for the people who do dream, some people prefer to live their dreams out in their minds where they are guaranteed never to fail. I can relate to that because off all the 200+ quirky dreams and goals I have on my list, there have been two stand-out goals which were so important to me that I avoided them altogether…(continue reading)

Poles Apart – 13th March, 2011

Featured Post: This year, like every other, I’ve decided I’m going to do something completely different… I’ve enjoyed my little journey into the blogasphere so much that I’ve hung up my toilet brush and returned to school to study Communications and Media. So imagine how thrilled I was when I opened my course books and discovered one of my first assignments was to start a blog. There’s only one word for that, really… AWESOME. I was delighted, of course, until I realised that the submission of this assignment coincides with the promise I made to you all in my last post… That’s right – after sewing and singing comes POLE DANCING. Spinning myself black and blue in a quest to uncover my stripper self may not exactly be an ideal subject matter to showcase my communication skills. But I’ve spent the last four weeks sustaining some pretty impressive injuries to tick this one off my list and I wouldn’t be true to the project if I didn’t blog about it…(continue reading)

Do Re Mi Fa SEW! – 5th February, 2011

Featured Post: When I was a kid, I refused to do anything if I didn’t already know how to do it. As you can imagine, that was pretty limiting for a 7 year old… For the first few years of my life, I only pursued the hobbies my sister did because watching her go before me gave me a 4 year head start on other kids my age. This idiosyncrasy was one of my greatest personal challenges as a young person and I worked so hard to overcome it that I ended up swinging completely the other way. Now if there’s not enough change in my life and if I’m not trying new things, I get depressed and fall into a slump. This may explain why I’ve had more than 30 jobs in my life and have lived in 11 different countries… so if learning new things is my drug of choice, it’s safe to say I’ve gotten high over the last 2 weeks… (continue reading)
